Remembering Martha Schingoethe
A special exhibit honoring the memory and vision of Martha Dunham
Schingoethe (1919-2004), one of the founding benefactors of the Schingoethe
Center for Native American Cultures at Aurora University
Open from October 8, 2004
 |
The Schingoethe Center was founded in 1989 through the generosity
of Martha and Herbert Schingoethe of Aurora, Illinois, who donated
to Aurora University their large collection of Native American
art and artifacts. They also made possible the construction of
Dunham Hall, named in honor of Martha's family, which houses the
Center and several university academic programs. The Schingoethes
have continued to provide significant support for the Center and,
in addtion, have taken a lively and constructive interest in the
development of the Center. With the passing of Martha Schingoethe
on February 17, 2004, we have lost a good friend and, in effect,
a colleague in the work of the Center.
This exhibit is a tribute to the major role that Martha played
in the founding and development of the Center, and to the legacy
she leaves in the ongoing activities of the Schingoethe Center
for Native American Cultures at Aurora University.
